1.Why we check
1.1Laws against money laundering and terrorist financing require payment companies to know who their customers are and to watch for unusual activity.
1.2Our licensed partner card issuer is bound by these laws for virtual cards. Niceway applies the issuer’s anti-money laundering rules to every card customer, and the same approach to gift cards and game top-ups.
2.Identity checks for virtual cards
2.1You sign up with your email and issue a card online, without documents. We ask you to verify your identity when the law requires it, or when a top-up or a payment looks unusual.
2.2To verify, you photograph a valid passport or national identity card and take a selfie. For larger amounts we may also ask for proof of address, such as a bank statement or utility bill from the last 3 months, and for where your money comes from.
2.3If a check cannot be completed, we can freeze the card or refuse a top-up until it is.
3.Limits
3.1Virtual cards: the smallest top-up is €10, £10 or $10, one payment can be up to $1,000 on Subscriptions, $5,000 on Travel and $10,000 on Premium, and you can hold up to 10 cards. All card limits are on our fees and limits page.
3.2Gift cards and game top-ups: up to €500 per order and €1,000 per day, or the same amounts in pounds or US dollars. We may ask you to verify your identity before accepting an order above these limits, or orders that look unusual.
4.Sanctions
4.1We and the card issuer check customers and payments against the sanctions lists of the United Nations, the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States, and the local terrorist list of the United Arab Emirates.
4.2We do not serve customers in, or payments to, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, or the areas of Ukraine not under the control of its government, including Crimea.
5.Unusual activity
5.1If an order or a payment looks unusual, we may ask you about it, delay it or refuse it.
5.2Where the law requires, we report suspicious activity to the authorities. The law may not allow us to tell you that we have made a report.
6.Records
6.1We and the issuer keep records of identity checks and transactions for 5 years after our relationship ends. The privacy notice explains how this data is used and protected.
