Coverage and networks

Your eSIM connects to a partner network in Japan and switches if the signal is better on another one. The networks for each plan are confirmed at checkout.

Japan rewards having data all day: route planners for trains that leave to the minute, maps for stations with dozens of exits and translation apps for menus. Free Wi-Fi exists in stations, cafés and convenience stores, but it often asks you to register first.

Coverage reaches the main islands from Hokkaido to Kyushu as well as Okinawa. In the Japanese Alps, on remote hiking trails and in some rural hot-spring towns the signal is weaker.

Check your phone first

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. If it was bought from a mobile network on contract, ask them to unlock it before you travel.

  • Dial *#06#. If you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM.
  • Most iPhones from XR and XS onwards, Google Pixel 3 onwards and Samsung Galaxy S20 onwards support eSIM.

We check it against the list of eSIM phones. Nothing is saved.

Japan eSIM questions

Can I buy the plan now and travel next month?

Yes. The plan starts when the eSIM first connects in Japan. Install it within 180 days of buying.

Does it work on the Shinkansen and in the metro?

Coverage follows the partner networks, which cover major rail lines and city metros. Some tunnels have no signal on any network.

Can I share data with my laptop?

Yes, hotspot is allowed on Japan plans. Hotspot use counts towards your data.

What if the eSIM does not connect?

Check that the eSIM line is on and that roaming is enabled for it. Our install guide lists the fixes, and you can contact us with your order number.
