Coverage and networks

Your eSIM connects to a partner network in Kenya. The networks for each plan are confirmed at checkout.

Nairobi is a busy start to most safaris, and ride-hailing with Uber or Bolt is the easy way to get around the city. One thing a travel eSIM cannot do is M-Pesa: Kenya’s mobile money service is tied to a local Safaricom SIM, and a data plan from abroad cannot use it.

Coverage is good in Nairobi, Mombasa and along the coast. In the Maasai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo the signal is often limited to lodges and nearby high ground, and long game drives can be offline for hours.

Check your phone first

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. If it was bought from a mobile network on contract, ask them to unlock it before you travel.

  • Dial *#06#. If you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM.
  • Most iPhones from XR and XS onwards, Google Pixel 3 onwards and Samsung Galaxy S20 onwards support eSIM.

We check it against the list of eSIM phones. Nothing is saved.

Kenya eSIM questions

Can I use M-Pesa with this eSIM?

No. M-Pesa runs on a Safaricom SIM with a Kenyan number, and Niceway plans are data only. If you need M-Pesa, buy a local Safaricom SIM on arrival and keep the eSIM for data.

Will I have signal in the Maasai Mara?

Many lodges and camps have some signal or Wi-Fi, but out on game drives it comes and goes. Save offline maps and your transfer details before you leave Nairobi.

Does one plan cover Kenya and Tanzania?

A Kenya plan works only in Kenya. For a safari that crosses into the Serengeti, add a Tanzania plan or choose a plan that lists both.

Can I buy the plan now and travel next month?

Yes. The plan starts when the eSIM first connects in Kenya. Install it within 180 days of buying.
