Coverage and networks

Your eSIM connects to a partner network in South Africa. The networks for each plan are confirmed at checkout.

Self-drive trips are the norm in South Africa – along the Garden Route, up to the Winelands or out to Kruger – and navigation, fuel stops and lodge bookings all lean on your phone. In the cities, ride-hailing with Uber or Bolt is a common way to get around after dark.

Coverage is good in cities and along the N2 and other main highways. Inside Kruger and other large game reserves the signal is mostly limited to rest camps and gates, and remote stretches of the Karoo and the Wild Coast can have long gaps.

Check your phone first

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. If it was bought from a mobile network on contract, ask them to unlock it before you travel.

  • Dial *#06#. If you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM.
  • Most iPhones from XR and XS onwards, Google Pixel 3 onwards and Samsung Galaxy S20 onwards support eSIM.

We check it against the list of eSIM phones. Nothing is saved.

South Africa eSIM questions

Will it work in Kruger National Park?

Near the main rest camps and gates you usually have signal; on game drives between them it is often missing. Download the park map and your bookings before you go in.

Can I use it in neighbouring countries on safari?

A South Africa plan works only in South Africa. For a trip that continues to Namibia, Botswana or Mozambique, add a plan for each country or choose one that lists them by name.

How much data do I need for a two-week road trip?

Navigation and messages use little: 5 GB covers a typical fortnight of maps and messaging. Choose 10 GB or more if you stream music in the car or share lots of videos.

Can I buy the plan now and travel next month?

Yes. The plan starts when the eSIM first connects in South Africa. Install it within 180 days of buying.
